In the past, have always bought software protection as a total package. I have avoided the free versions because they are often cut down, and I don't believe it is wise to cut corners with security.
The license for my Bit Defender has now expired, and I have not renewed it partly because it makes my ageing PC (1.6Ghz) slow down.
After reading an Isitme post, I temporarily installed the free version of Avast which seems to be quite a good choice. Now what else ought to go with it (Zone Alarm?) without overlapping or leaving holes in the security of my XP Pro SP2 machine?
I notice buying the two separates will cost somewhat more than I have paid before for combined packages.
Cheers

Hello, I used Zone
Hello, I used Zone Alarm Free for several years. Went well. [Now have a modem wireless router and don't really need ZA yet leave it and up-date it] . Also for years have had Lavasoft's Ad-aware. Free one is Anniversay Edition, and allows up-dates. At this www.lavasoft.com I found the Free one not so easy to find, but it's there ! All these are fine. I've read Avast is fine too. Gerald.

Should add, as first reply
Should add, as first reply may read oddly, also use AVG Free anti-virus; used that for years. No reason to change any of the three. Gerald.

Thanks for that advice. I
Thanks for that advice.
I wouldn't use a PC without a firewall, simply because whilst the router may prevent incoming attacks, it does not stop malicious code sending data out.
Up till now, I had Teatimer (Spybot S&D) and Adwatch (Adware) running in the background, but something was blocking viewing of some legitimate web pages as well as gobbling resources and slowing boot up and shutdown times.
Maybe I'll give ZA a chance.

Firewall
Comodo is a very good firewall, which works well with Avast. It also has an AV program but I have never tried it. You can install the firewall or AV on their own or both together.
