When data is written to a disc, it’s first combined into a single file known as an ISO image. You might download some sofware and find that it’s in the .iso format. In this situation you can either write the ISO to a disc or you can get Windows to pretend that the file is a disc. The file is said to be “mounted” when you do this. Virtual CloneDrive emulates a DVD disc drive on your PC. This means that while there’s no physical drive, or way of inserting a disc into it, Windows will think that there is. Using Virtual CloneDrive you can mount a disc image to one of these drives, instantly creating a readable fake disc. ... read more »
Web pages are fine for casual browsing, but most people prefer to stick to paper when it comes to reading reams of text. This means that a huge number of web pages are printed each day, but how much of what we end up printing is really required? More often than not, it’s just a small section of the site that’s of interest to us, so a great deal of what we print is never read, or at least not read thoroughly. This is not only a waste of resources and harmful to the environment, but it also means we’re clogging up our houses, offices and briefcases with hard copy. ... read more »

Mac and Linux users have had virtual desktop software for years, and it’s been notable in its absence from the PC. The software enables you to set up more, “fresh” Operating Systems on your PC, and it’s a incredibly useful and productive way of working.
One of the main reasons to use a virtual desktop is that it increases your screen real-estate. As we use our PCs for more and more tasks we often find that our Vista Taskbar becomes filled up with programs. Virtual desktops enable you to switch between entire OSes as you would between programs. It's a real boon if you're running a netbook or a small monitor on your home PC, where applications fight for screen space. It can also be used to diagnose problems: if a certain program keeps crashing, you can run it in a virtual desktop to prevent it shutting down your whole PC. ... read more »
A new type of phishing attack known as "tab nabbing" is doing the rounds that works by changing the content of tabs you've opened and haven't looked at in a while. So, for example, you might have your online banking page open in the background. Malicious code on another page changes the web address on your banking page to that of a fake page that looks the same. So when you flip back to your banking page, everything looks the same except the URL. But it's quite likely you won't notice this, because you don't expect it to have changed. Alternatively, tab nabbing code might change an unrelated page into a email login screen in the hope that you assume you opened it and forgot. ... read more »
